I got them out about 4 or 5 days ago, and on the 3rd day my bottom left started hurting. i shrugged it off, and took more painkillers. when i first got home from the surgery, i rinsed the blood out of my mouth becuase i was so drugged after, i didn't hear them say not to. i kept forgetting about the no straw rule, but i didnt drink out of a straw until about the 3rd day. the rest of my mouth is completely fine, but the bottom left one has been hurting alot. painkillers don't help it out that much. last night i couldn't go to sleep because it was causing a throbbing feeling around my ear area. i know those are symptoms, but i'm kind of doubting i have it becuase the pain is tolerable, for the most part. it's not horrible, but it's still hurting worse than everything else.
what do you guys think? what should i do about the dry socket? is it really a serious thing, or can i let it heal by itself?

When you have a tooth extracted, a clot forms to protect the bony socket that is left behind. If this clot is dislodged by rinsing or dissolves by some reason this leaves the bone unprotected. This will give rise to a painful condition known as a dry socket. This occurs 3-5 day after an extraction so the timing is probably right.
This exposed bone becomes necrotic (dead). As a protective response of our body the underlying healhty bone separates this dead bone from itself. This separated dead bone is called a sequestra. This will eventually shed off but may take some time. A dry socket actually heals by itself but is a very painful condition. Pain relievers may not be very helpful.
The dentist can help alleviate this pain by putting a protective dressing in the socket to cover the bone. This will result in an almost instantaneous relief. The area is first cleaned before putting the dressing. Under no circumstance should the area be cleaned by scraping. This will only result in disturbing the new layer of bone that is forming under the dead bone. This may also serve to create and spread infection to other areas of the bone. Cleaning is done by flushing the area with a salt solution (normal saline solution)

I'm an Oral Surgery Assistant. And to me it sounds like you do have a dry socket. They usually appear around the 3rd day. It is cause from the blood clot either not forming like it should or falling out. The extraction site or the hole where the tooth was is just empty instead of filling up with blood, so the nerves in that area are exposed to air and other things causing the pain. Dry sockets do eventually heal themselves, but you can go back to the dentist and he can insert some medicine in it called eugenol which smells like cloves. It's a little pain full but it takes care of the problem. The dizziness and drowsiness I believe is from all that medicine your taking. I hope that helped you out.

The throbbing is a definite sign of dry socket, although you don't seem to be in extreme pain, just moderate or tolerable as you say, but you are taking pain medication without a great deal of relief. This may be making the pain you are having, more tolerable than you think.
I don't think you could have rinsed vigorously enough to dislodge the forming clots, but you may have done just that. I would like to think that you were so numb that you couldn't get enough water in "to swish" that would cause a dry socket, but that is just what I would "like" to think. This is the very reason we don't like for you to do "any" rinsing the first 24 hours as it "can" cause a clot in its "early stages" to fail or break free leaving the bone exposed with no bleeding going on to form another clot. Your mouth should have been wiped clean after the extractions so you wouldn't feel the need to do this.
So my advice is for you to see your OS or dentist as soon as possible for them to pack the area off. Yes, it is serious since it is exposed bone, and will continue to hurt and the pain will soon become unbearable. No, it will not heal by its self; it needs to have a dressing placed that will stimulate a new clot to form. It was an easy mistake to make with the rinsing. Your dentist or OS will take care of this in minutes without any discomfort and you will feel much better. I hope I've been of some help and good luck with your healing!
Additional information: The dizziness and headache can be symptoms of the dry socket but may be more from the pain medication, especially if you are taking it on an empty stomach. You need to see your OS or dentist today, call them this morning so they can work you in. You will feel much better when you do, good luck!

Yep, dry socket. An extraction wouldn't keep you up afterwards. See your dentist that did the extraction. It's not worth putting up with the pain because the packing procedure takes 5 minutes.

Most people who've had a dry socket will tell you-- you'll KNOW you have a dry socket because the pain is unbearable! Go back to you dentist/oral surgeon-- they can put a kind of medicated 'pack' in the socket to help it heal. I hope this helps!
