This is an old wive's tale and does not work. It is harmful to the dog, in fact, especially so if the dog licks the oil off, which it is very likely to do.
Your friend needs some education before he tries to cure his dog of anything else.

Putting used motor oil on a dog to kill Mange mites has been an old country remedy for many many years. However it is not the safest nor most effective remedy to cure Mange. There are 2 forms of Mange, Sarcoptic and Demodectic.Sarcoptic is contagious and Demodectic is hereditary. To find out which form your dog has, take it to a veterinary hospital and ask for a skin scraping. The Vet will look at the mites under a microscope and tell you which type of Mange your dog has and recommend the proper treatment for that type of Mange.

Only a hoosier would say that! I had a feed store for 17 years, and I heard that and more. I even heard that chewing tobaco shoved down a dogs throat works better then any wormer! LOL! Pople like that dont deserve animals. Or how about the one where you put your beagle in a dryer with buck scent so he will never run deer again! I've heard it all! Stay away from those home remideis, they'll cause more harm then good! Now oil on a chickens tail feathers will keep another from picking his tail, in all my years, wich are 50, thats the only home remidy i ever seen work! Skin so soft is harmful to horses to by the way in the heat, it clogs the pours, hence prevent sweating. Why dont animal owners just use whats made for there animal! Becareful of what your hear! Take care!

DON'T DO THAT! It will kill your dog. Dogs lick themselves, and therefore, the dog will lick the motor oil. Would you want to ingest motor oil? It would kill you too!!!
Demodectic mange is an autoimmune problem. Feed a better diet and allow some time to grow, and it usually goes away.
Scarcoptic mange has to be cured by a vet... And if that is the type, you can catch it.
In other words, get to a vet before you get mange or kill your dog!

motor oil is a poisonous and archaic way that doesn't really work. it is cruel. mange is a skin condition caused by either demodex or sarcoptic mites. demodex mites are always present on dogs skin, this type of mange is not contagious and is generally genetic because the mites over grow. however, sarcoptic mange are extremely contagious. That someone should of taken the dog to the vet to A. figure out which type and B. to properly treat it.

back in the day the Indians used to piss on cuts to make them heal faster. And Guess what? It works. Ammonia will close up a cut faster than almost anything, BUT...we have bandaids now, so pissing isn't the best option.
same thing goes for some of the older "cures" for animal ailments. It MAY work, and it may have been considered the best way once upon a time, but we have much better medicine now, and it's usually much easier to wash off the dog and the furniture the dog may get on than used motor oil.
call your vet!

Bad idea! Go to the vet and get the real treatment. Used motor oil is highly flammable and dangerous for dogs to lick off their skin plus it's dirty and gets on everything. Even if it did work it wouldn't be worth the risk. Just get the real medications from the vet.

Wow! You brought back child hood memories. I remember this from years ago.
I think it keeps the dog from chewing themselves as much because of the taste and it MAY relieve some of the itching but I'm not sure.
Probably unsafe to put motor oil on any living thing, though.
