Well, you have a choice of answers. The first has no Biblical backing, just a nice, feel good doctrine based on man's opinion and Peter Pan advice. I do not think that is what you are looking for. What you need is the truth, and many times the truth hurts.
For salvation, what you need is a spiritual bone marrow transplant.Your spirit is sick and dying. You can do good works, and that is great, but that does not heal you of the disease. What you need is a transplant from the One who gave His marrow for you so that you can have brand new blood.
In the book of Numbers the people were being bitten by vipers. Everyone was bitten and had the venom in their veins, it was just a matter of time until they died. They repented and asked God to take away the serpents. God did not do that because it would not keep them from dying. Instead, He commanded a brass serpent be mounted on a standard. Anyone who looks upon this object would not die from the venom.
Jesus said that "You must be born again" and then added, "as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up."
Your answer lies in looking to Jesus as your Lord and Savior. As much as you do not want to hear this--it is your answer. You can't be saved by good works.
Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us.
2 Timothy 1:9
Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began
Remember, if we are saved by works, who gets the glory, God? Or you for being such a great person?
Ephesians 2
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

With 66 answers before me, a "NO". I had to make it 67 to eliminate the beast from this question ha ha.
Does it really matter what I think or what others think in regards to a decision that is out of the hands of those ask to think?
I do agree with some of your observations on respect to actions of some who call themselves Christians. However as a "NO" I do have my own views because I am the only "NO" I do Know.
My view is that Heaven is the place prepared for those who do accept the fact a God does exist and that God did prepare it for those that do first accept this as a fact. You of course are free to have tour own view and I can accept that as being right for you.
I am curious about your question. Where did you get the idea that being kind, compassionate, and having a good heart will get one into heaven? I am not saying you are wrong, but I am wondering how one gets a "Good" heart in your view. Besides this word "Good" that you used is a point of view word thus I must ask, "In who's view or by what standard is this 'Good' determined"? Is it by your standards, my standards, or the standards of someone or something else?
Do have a great day and smile as you think about the answer I gave. You have my email if you want to comment.

How does an atheist get to heaven?
First off, how can an atheist believe in heaven?
Kind of a contradiction, don't you think?
Secondly, works and deeds alone do not ensure that you are heaven bound.
How about this: Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved.
Or this: No one approaches the Father but through me.

I like your question. It's an intelligent one, but unfortunately the idea goes against scriptural interpretation. See, it doesn't matter HOW horrible you are, if you believe in God and/or Jesus, and/or are saved/baptized, repent, confess, etc (depending on what your personal belief is), you'll go to heaven.
I happen to lack a belief in anything like that. I think a kind, compassionate, honest life is it's own reward, no threats or forgiveness necessary -- except possibly one's own and that of someone you may have wronged.
EDIT: It's interesting how some people are so obsessed with hating George Bush that they'll take any question and twist it into a condemnation of the President.

A star question. The reason is quite simple we Christians believe that the only way you get to heaven is by believing in God not by your actions.
Of course this could mean that heaven is going to be full of really nasty, and hurtful God believing souls. I have to admit I have met several people who would make a better christian than me, yet they are atheists.
In an ideal world by believing in God a person will become more caring, considerate and loving, but we are human and still make mistakes.

Atheist by definition means a person who doesn't believe in God. So I agree with quella belle. How can an atheist go to a place , or even want to go to a place that you believe doesn't exist. If your the best and kindest person in the world would not matter if Heaven did not exist.

Here is a link that may answer a few of your questions:
http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/hell.html
Also, are any atheists perfect? If not, they will never make it to heaven. No one is perfect, so that is why we all deserve Hell. But if you believe in Jesus Christ and repent of your sins, you can be saved. Here is why good works cannot save you: If good people get into heaven, then heaven will not be heaven because heaven is perfect. Good people will do horrible things under certain circumstances. Heaven would eventually fall apart if "good" people were just let in, because of human nature.

Because there is ONE path to the Kingdom and atheism is not it! You are right some people who PROFESS to be Christians don't uphold the standard of what a Christian should be so you shouldn't compare yourself with them to decide whether or not your a 'good' person. How can you look around you and see all the perfection and magnificence of nature, our bodies, living things, outer space and not be convinced there is a God who planned and put it all into place. Because you look around and see man corrupt, killing each other, polluting, and lying dosen't mean you can say there is no God. Man turned away by Himself after the Snake-In-The-Garden scene on his own. Not by will or intent of the Lord.
so yea anyway had to put my 2cents i hope you'll think about it . Atheist may believe they are 'good' people with out the Lord but all kinds of people think all kinds of things THAT ARE NOT TRUE! How can atheist cut them off from man's life-source, the Lord and not expect the earth to go spiralling out of control??
ne wayz bye
had to say that

Because the basis of christian faith is that Jesus was God in the flesh and he died on the cross for our sins. It says in the bible that you must believe Jesus with your heart, and express your belief with your mouth. You cant be accepted into heaven if you don't believe in those things. Atheists don't believe in God. How can an atheists enter into a heaven that don't even believe in?

God gave the world rules to obey for the good of society, Christians obey those rules out of love for God(not that all Christians obey all the rules, I am being as hypothetical as your question).
If an atheist is following those exact same rules, for no reason other than he thinks they are good for society. Then he is not doing it because he loves God because He doesn't believe in God. So why would he care if he would go to a Heaven he doesn't believe in either?
