A parakeet size should be fine for a few days. My Green Cheek Conure and White Eyed Conure both have travel cages that are smaller than their regular cages and they do just fine.

I travel with my birds all the time.

What I do is have a small travel cage, this is a MUST as the smaller cages belted in cars are safer than larger ones. Where ever I go I either tell the peopel I'm seeing to find a dead tree or stump or when I get there I do this myself & that's where my birds live on during my travels & they sleep in the travel cages.

Alternatively you can open up the travel cages so they're not cramped in there all day. If your needs to be in the cage all day because you're out, then yes a larger cage should be taken as well as the travel cage.

Bird harnessess are excellent providing your birds accept them. Not all birds do.

Do not take his big cage. There are travel cages for sale on eBay and in high end pet stores.

I use a cat carrier with a wire bottom I made for it to hold onto. Food and water are in there and he can see out. I take him out often so he does not feel enclosed. This works perfectly for us - he is an African Grey.

Unless you used a harness when he was a tiny baby, he will not like it now. Be sure his flight feathers are trimmed before leaving. And..Good you are taking him with you.

If you are traveling for a long time then you shoud try to find a cage a little bigger than a keet one but it should be okay for a while, just take him/her out when ever you stop to let it spred it's wings and stuff, and if you have a harness that would be great because then you could take it out in the open instead of just the car.

For traveling, i bought a bird carrier at petco for my birds. Alot easier to transport them in this then the big bulky cage.

If you are only going to be gone for a few days, then a smaller cage (big enough for him to spread his wings in without touching the sides) should be fine.

To be on the safe side, are his wings clipped? I always make sure my birds wings are freshly clipped before traveling to be safe.
