First come, first serve, and then I mean in person. You can't let the load of laundry be a 'place keeper'. Just like at the grocery store it doesn't count to put your shopping cart in line and still go running all through the store to get things you 'forgot'! If a *person* is there, they're standing in line, but if it's only their things then (carefully) put those aside and go about your business.

Here are the rules at Princeton:
1. On weekends, if crowded, students may use no more than one washer at a time. Two on weekdays.
2. If a washer has completed its cycle and clothes have not been removed, a student should transfer these clothes to a dryer. If no dryer is available, the student should wait a courtesy five minutes and then may remove the wet clothing and place it on a clean countertop.
3. If a dryer has completed its cycle, the student should wait a courtesy 10 minutes before removing clothing and placing it on a table. Folding is not necessary. Violators of these and other laundry room rules shall be subjected to a suspension from laundry room privileges of not less than one year.

At my house, every 4 condos in a row share a washer and dryer. Since it's only 4 families we kinda know each other. We have it almost set so that each person gets the same days in the week. (but there is no rule) If someone needs to do a load for the next day, they leave their basket on top of the dryer to symbolize they need to use it next. I think it's rude to leave the lid open. I would have let them use one load for clothes for the next day but not a huge pile for the whole week. You shouldn't have to wait around though, leaving their clothes there was sufficient enough.

You were justified. Glad to know that you use a timer. Nothing is more agrivating than someone who leaves their clothes in an off washer or dryer, when you want to use it. Know what I mean? Anyway, you were in the right. I used to set a basket with all my dirty clothes on top of the washer I was using, just so the next person knew I had another load to do.

If they're not going to stick around to ask for the next use of the machine, you have every right to go ahead and add your next load. If someone wants the machine badly enough to use it, he/she will stick around. I'd just be sure to stay in the room for that second load because people can be vindictive about laundry rooms. Best bet is to ask your landlord/manager about fair use of the rooms. That way you know if they'll support you in case you end up in a dispute about it.

no, you were not rude, you started your laundry day before the other person. I think they were just marking their place in line next.

in my old apartment building there was an unspoken rule, if the clothes in the dryer are dry you could put them nicely on the folding table or if they laft a basket on top in the basket. If they were wet you left them alone and either waited for a dryer to be done or took them home and hung them all over(this happened more often so i got a folding clothes rack for the patio and my clothes got dried that way. There are people who will be mean and take your wet clothes out , there are worse people that will throw bleach in your colors(happened to one of my friends after a confrontation about the laundry room) just do what you think is right, if you run into someone else doing laundry ask them what they would do.
