I'm planning a 1-2 week trip in August to South America or Europe... ideally a mix of city exploring and some outdoor activity. Where should I go?

Broaden your horizons. Come to Asia. Thailand, Lao, Cambodia and Vietnam are all gorgeous and very inexpensive. Most people that I have spoken to about South America mention the same problem with extreme food poisoning. Several have said that it spoiled their whole trip. I am currently living in Vietnam and never have these problems. The food is great, the Hotels are under ten bucks a night and the people are wonderful. Northern Thailand and Lao are great and visiting the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia was absolutely phenomenal. All this on less money that you will spend in the other continents. The women are great the booze is cheap. ( 15 cents for a glass of beer in Vietnam) and any type of terrain that you could want. From white sand beaches to green mountain passes. Top quality city discos to Sand floored beach bars. Just think about it. Have fun what ever you decide.
