ive been wanting to start tattooing but havent been able to do an apprenticeship yet hopeing to make a portfolio using the fake skin you can buy dont know much about machine brands have been researching any comments would be apprecitated

Bicknee supply ( http://bicknee.com )sells very good quality machines at very fare prices. I always point my apprentices in that direction for starter guns. Stay away from magazine advertised supplies ie Spaulding and Rogers or Superior. These companies sell the cheapest machines that will not last you long and will be difficult to keep in tune. I agree you should be taught by a professional rather than a video, book, or self teaching. Good Luck

You build a portfolio on drawings and paintings. Don't teach yourself to tattoo because your mentor will have to "unteach" bad habits and, truth be told, we won't take on an apprentice who already has been tattooing - it is like fighting a losing battle.
