I know that rien means nothing, but what is Riens? Could it possibly be the name of some kind of people...?

"Les Petits Riens" usually mean "those little things", "the unimportant people" or "the poor". Must be some biblical reference. There's even a Catholic charitable organisation to help the poor called "Les Petits Riens" here in Belgium.

The little nothings... same meaning in plural. The title of the composition.

No, it means Little Nothings. Beethoven called them Bagatelles, I believe.
