Even though I don't see that happening.

No the Americans were never afraid to fight anyone. I remember a young Eddie Davis with only about 30 fights fighting the vaunted Cuban Champion. I don't know whether he won but he wasn't overawed or intimidated. The same would have applied to Greg Page.

Was Teofilio Stevenson afraid to turn professional? Amateur is almost a different sport all together. I mean, Stevenson was an amateur for ALL of his career. It is similar to a high school senior who has been a senior for four years knowing the answers on a test. You can not call him smart, he has been doing the same thing for years vs kids that are just doing it for the first time. Stevenson was nothing special because as an amateur, he made a career, fighting teenaged amateurs who went on to pro. Then he would pick off the next amaeur kid.

If he wasn't, he should have been. In a three round Olympic (not to be confused with American amateur boxing) style bout, maybe only Ali or Jimmy Young would have chance against Stevenson. Stevenson might even beat them. If he came out and went pro, I think a lot of our best guys would whip him. I would never call Greg Page 'one of our best guys' though.
