... Where's a fig leaf when you need one?...

you may not agree but an atheist and 5th grade christian would not misinterpret it.. Because he see's it for what it is and does not try to interpret a certain way so that it meshes with today's culture.. Nor does he try to manipulate it to where it somehow will make sense with science.. For instance.. The seven day theory ( " a day in god's eyes could be a thousand years" Even that is a stretch though. It would have to be at least 50 million years per day). That is the whole reason Atheist do not believe in the bible, because it does not corrilate with Science.. So he reads it as it is and meant to be. Some of the excerpts sound so ridiculous that Christians try to interpret into something else, because not to ,, would be admitting that the bible is not true.. So actually maybe a fifth grader christian and a Atheist, both interpret the same way, for what it is. A fifth grader would not know better to change the word so it fit in with society and Science today..

I would go with the atheist. By the way, there are atheists who study religion including the bible. Its an important part of society. Any biblical scholar, including an atheist, should have better insight due to knowing the background of the writing, the type of writing it is and a better understanding of language.

The 5th grade reading level. Being a biblical scholar means you must have a great understanding of the bible. But the bible was written a long time ago, when people talked funny. Ex: istead of saying " the big red ball " you'd say "ball bg red" ok, it was a bad example, but I am talking about the language structure. I read part of the bible when I was in 5th grade, and I was like, " say what!?!?!?!?!?!?".

It depends because most atheistic biblical scholars have an agenda to undermine the text regardless of the original intention of the authors. Then there is reader response criticism which would validate even a 5th graders response to the text.

First,"who?"...exactly deemed the atheist to be a scholar???
Was it just one more educated idiot that believes in this "big bang" theory?..Or was it from the only one whom can declare such a truth?...or did your very own ego lead you to believe this dillusion?
Secondly, does this Christian, with the fifth grade reading level, have the infilling of the Holy Spirit, which is God's spirit, which is all knowing, which is the same spirit that is of the same God,that created the atheist "bible scholar?"
And if this so called scholar,is so highly educated, then how come he doesn't seem to know better than to ask questions while he's so obviously under the influence of arrogance ?

Both, but the Atheist is working at a greater disadvantage because the Bible is a book of faith and the supposed biblical scholar's presuppositions get in the way of the simplest understanding.

After studying it in depth if a Biblical scholar was not an atheist they wouldn't really be a scholar.

The 5th grade reader has an advantage over the atheist because the atheist has already misinterpreted it.

Oh no, not the more naked picture!

It seems as though you feel a need to tout what I assume are your credentials in order to feel as though you are "better than" believers. In reality, you should feel secure about your own lack of belief system and leave believers alone to their faith.

Some people interpret literally; some, contextually. Irregardless, they are all reaching for the same ultimate truth, a relationship with the higher power. That doesn't make them uneducated or stupid or less than you. It makes them different from you.

Surely you, as the educated person that you SEEM claim to be, can appreciate diversity in people.

The Christian. Christians misinterpret the Bible all the time. Why do you think there are so many denominations?
