Funny you ask this. Everytime I go somewhere and see so many teens and 20 somethings smoking, I just can't get over it. I think everyone that is choosing to smoke...before they do...should visit a chemo clinic. Or, talk to lung cancer patients.
1 in 4 people get some type of cancer. Why people would increase their odds... beyond me. Some people just don't think it will happen to them... and they have NO idea what their body goes through in order to just fight the cancer once you get it.

I am a breast cancer surviver..It was not caused from my smoking .I was on estrogin and provera that I had taken through prescitption for six years this triggered the cancer in my breast. It is called estrogin recetor positive.Think twice befor taking both of these together . dr. have known this for years .estrogen on its own maybe ok to take for a very short time. dr. say these hormones are good for the bones and the heart while going through menapause..1 81 mil. of asprin a day plus calsium with vitamin D will be much better to take .
for the bones and the heart

For the same reason I just downed a 3 pack of trans fat laden Hostess HOHOs. Just this once and I'll eat right tomorrow. So I wonder why I bought 8 packs - oh yea - they were on sale and I got them to share. So when I have my heart attack I too will be surprised - I thought heart attack were for fat guys smoking cigars and drinking beer!
Basically we think we are the exception - and besides we feel pretty health today, and we plan to quit tomorrow before too much damage is done. etc. etc. etc.

It is amazing, isn't it. It's a self-defense mechanism that we all have to one extent or another...the "It can't happen to me" mindset. The younger you are, the more common the phenomenon. We all feel we are, more or less, immortal when we are young. That's why young people take more personal risks, in general, than older people. Slowly over time, we come to realize...hey, we're not immortal. By that time, smokers...and everyone else who consciously makes lifestyle choices that we KNOW are not healthy ...have the habits/behaviors so ingrained in our daily lives that stopping is extremely difficult.

What makes you think they are surprised? Do you have experience of numbers of people getting lung cancer? I've only known of one person getting lung cancer and she (nor family members) never smoked (it was caused by a chemical compound in the course of her job). I think the kids who chew smokeless tobacco are the ones truly surprised (losing tongue and other mouth parts due to cancer by the age of 25).
Surprisingly, a very large number of extended family members in my family smoked and nobody has ever had lung cancer. We seem to be somewhat resistant to cancers as they are rare in my family. Fortunately, both my Dad and I quit smoking in 1990 and my brother mostly stays not smoking.
