If it is a 1-800 number...I say;
"Who is this? What is it that you want!"
I know this is rude, but I am so tired of being solicited by phone! I really want one evening to myself...please!!

If I'm not expecting a call, or if I don't know who is calling, I usually just say hello, then wait for them to say something.
If I'm expecting a call, I might say something that is relevant to what the person is calling about. For example, if its my insurance agent returning a call from me, I might give him the business a bit by saying something like - "Good thing it wasn't an emergency!"
One time, when I'd been talking with my sister for awhile & we got disconnected I answered - "Well, I didn't know I'd gotten you so mad that you'd hang up on me!"
Another time when I was having a family gathering at my house & about half the people were already there & the other half had the wonderful idea to call at the last minute to see if I needed anything I answered - "Grand Central Station!"
I think mixing it up & answering in a way that makes whoever is calling wake-up & really listen is a good thing. Too many times we all get stuck in our old ways of doing things & aren't really listening.
Try this. The next time someone says "Hi, how you doing?" , instead of your normal "Yeah, hi, I'm fine", stop for 1 second, think about how you're really feeling, then say whatever that is. Could be - "Gosh, ya know, I've got a slight headache.", or it might be, "Thanks for asking! I'm feeling so good I just want to hug everyone!" I guarantee you people will stop & give you a second look. Who knows - it might be the best thing that happens in their whole day.

If I don't know the person, I just say "hello". Family & friends are a different story. I have many phrases that I use for different people that call me. It keeps everyone smiling! :)

I answer the phone hello. Sometimes if I am feeling especially cheerful, I may say good morning.
