You should go to your local shelter and play with some of the cats/kittens. Each cat is different and you need to see which one chooses YOU. American shorthair are easier to take care of because they shed less and can groom themselves without needing extra brushing.
I have 3 Orange Tabbies. They are laid back and do like to play with toys.( The 2 male tabbies are very friendly, the female-which according to my vet is very rare-is more moody). As cats get older they play less and sleep more but they will snuggle more.
Shelter cats are great to adopt. You are saving a life and they will have their shots. Most are also microchipped so if it gets lost, it can be found.

A cat from a human society/sanctuary. These cats have sometimes had a hard life, but most turn around to become loving friendly members of your family (when raised the right way!)
I know the kittens we have gotten from a cageless sanctuary have been the most outgoing. They had constant handling since they reached the haven, and the lady who runs it is part cat herself! (*I'm not serious here* lol)
Other times, you just have to work with the individual cat. Some cats are never cuddly, and some will still cower under your bed even though you know they have never been hurt, especially by you.
it all depends on the cat's personality! Email me if you have any questions on raising a healthy happy cat.

I had a Rag doll mix for 20 years she used to come to a whistle, meet me at the door, play fetch.. just like a dog but better...she died in at the beginning of May.. recently I went to a shelter and found my 6 yr old Maine coon (actually he picked me) from what I have read on Internet he probably will be somewhat like my girl. not as vocal as my girl but hes great and males are typically 12-18 lbs big cool cats!!!
Careful when you get the shelter cats.. see if they microchip most do now a days (i think) but with that at least in AZ where I am the microchip company also enrolled my boy in a 30 day insurance program which is good because he had a fever this weekend and had to go to the Doc. Good Luck!

A domestic shorthair. These are basically cat "mutts". Purebred cats are expensive and not really worth it--all cats are basically the same, except for attitude and coat color. Purebreds are more prone to diseases. Domestic shorthairs vary in cuddliness and playfulness--the shelter personnel will match you up with the right cat. Make sure you don't have allergies before you take any action.

Get a cat from the shelter. Don't worry about the breed. Most cats from the shelter are of mixed breed and are usually less temperamental than the full breeds. I had a Siamese that was a terrible snot. I had a Abyssinian that was mean. I had a Persian that was psycho. I had a plain calico cat that was very sweet. So that's my experience!

Go to the animal shelter and pick out the cat that picks *you* out. Get one that reaches through the cage to try and grab you. Get one that meows at you, too. This cat will be the one who plays the most and likes you the most.
Don't get one that just sits in the cage and looks at you -- even though it may be the cutest.

The easiest is just a domestic shorthair. They don't shed, so if you have allergies to cats it won't bother you much.
But longhair cats are adorable if you don't mind brushing them every day.
All cats will play with toys sometimes, but if you get a kitten and play with it constantly...thats all it will want to do
