Believe it or not, it's as simple as stretching 30 min. a day. make sure you stretch all your muscles and joints. hold each at least 10 secs.
It will gradually increase your flexibility

go to Amazon.com and get the DVD "Ultimate Flexibility" by Sang H Kim (a well respected TKD master from Korea.)

The DVD has stretching "workouts" rated beginner, moderate or advnaced (all on one DVD) plus bonus workouts for high kicks and splits.

The workouts are great, you feel great afterward, and combined wtih your normal classes you will see an imidiate increase in flexibility. Do it everyday.

Make sure to also stretch at the end of a hard workout - anytime your muscles are already warmed up. I also noticed (I'm sure for the same reason) but right out of the shower or a hot jacuzzi is a great time to stretch - can reach a lot further

Simple routine for increasing flexibility in legs and hips.

-Stand with your feet double shoulder width apart.
-Tounch the floor, and bounce up and down from your hips.
-Touch your left foot with both hands and hold, then your right.
-Repeat step 3.
-Reach backwards with your hands, and bounce backwards and forwards from your hips.
-Take your weight on your hands and widen your legs as far as they can go.
-Stay there for a while, feeling the stretch.
-Walk yourself backwards, feel the stretch.
-Walk yourself forwards and push your groin to the floor (keeping your feet flat on the ground).
-Return to the wide leg stance.
-Ease up so your double shoulder width apart.
-Repeat cycle.

Hold in each stage for around 20-30 seconds.
Of course there are many other stretches, but doing this maybe twice a day will increase the target hip area's flexibility.
Repeat cycle 2-3 times.

Try yoga stretch, it really helps. Also, touch your toes, stretch everywhere at night or whenever. Try to do it daily and you will see an increase in flexibility.

Do the stretching exercises you are taught in class every day. It takes a very long time. I didn't get my side split down until I was a blue belt.
The dvd suggested is also a good idea (I might get a copy ^_^).
