It's like so many other aspects of life. The better you can communicate the better you get along. If your fellow drivers know what you are doing it is easier for them to cooperate with you.
Or cut you off and flip you the bird, but at least they knew what you wanted.

The correct name for the "blinkers" are signals, as in turn signals, lights, brake lights, etc.
If they are used correctly, and seen by people who understand the rules of the road, then we have successfully communicated with each other what our intentions are, and we can carefully avoid getting in each other way.
Let's suppose we are at an intersection.
There is a car with its turn signal on, indicating that the driver intends to turn right.
Another car comes straight through the intersection, because all the other cars signals are that they are not coming straight through. Well the car that had been signaling intention to turn right, instead turns left, and the two of them collide.
This accident occurred because one driver signaled intention to go one way, then actually went the opposite way. Happens a lot. People turn on signal, change their mind, do not turn it off, then decide to go different way, do not signal first.
Let's suppose I am driving through a residential street, and a ball comes rolling out of a yard into the street. I apply my brakes because when a ball does that, it is often chased soon after by some kids or their dog into the street without looking first to see if a car is coming.
If anyone is following me, and they are not tail gating, they should see my brake light go on, meaning I am slowing down for some reason, and they can avoid crashing into the back of me by also slowing down.

Blinkers DON'T prevent accidents... a driver who USES them might !! It also requires that other drivers are paying attention.
I'm amazed at how many people make NO use of their turn signals... on the freeway, highway, or even on local roads.
I think California should spend a one-year period were they ticket ANYONE not using their signals... and fine them $500-1000 per violation.
