The way I understand it is that I would sign over the title, but then they drive/tow it away without officially transferring ownership. Has anyone had any problems with this? Once they take it are they responsible if anything happens?

Make sure that you get a receipt for the vehicle when you donate it. If your state requires it, notify the DMV of the transfer.

You also want to be sure that the donation is to a 501c3 Charity, so that you can get the tax deduction.

As long as you have the donation receipt, you should have no problems. Most charities will tow the vehicle, rather than attempt to drive it. Most cars that are donated have problems of some kind, and for safety they are towed.
