Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Download and install the free version of Grisoft's AVG anti-virus. It's available at the below link...no fees originally, and no fees ever for updates.

You want one that will find rootkits. None of Zone Alarms, Norton AV, McAfee will do that.
I have two PCs, one running Norton Internet Security 2007, the other running McAfee Internet security suite - both of them were infected by malware under rootkits. Neither Norton or McAfee caught it. I used F-Secure to clean up both machines.
Also use more than one anti-spyware program.

Download AVG Free - they don't come any cheaper than that! Make sure you uninstall your current AV before installing or you may get conflicts. AVG does everything you want really well without slowing your computer to a crawl.

I used AVG in the past, but now use Avast. It's free and has worked great on my systems.
