Ransomes and Rapier of Ipswich had three, one after the other.
I've got pictures of them somewhere, with "The Biffer" on a nice brass plate prominently displayed on the side of each loco.
They were shunting engines at their engineering works.

Though I suspect that wasn't the context.
Nor slang for an attacking batsman at cricket?
(As opposed to a "blocker")

A Biffer is a cricketing term for an attacking batsman as opposed to a blocker which is a defensive batsman. It comes from the 'biff' which means 'hit'. Nowadays in cricket a biffer is a big hitter. (Don't ask me how I know, I hate cricket!)
