It is vital that you determine which food(s) set off a reaction. If you experience cramping and bloating mainly after eating dairy products, or sugar-free gum or candies, the problem may not be IBS. Instead, your body may not be able to tolerate the sugar (lactose) in dairy products, or the artificial sweetener sorbitol.

Try avoiding foods that are high in fructose corn syrup (soft drinks, fruit beverages, cookies, gum, jams, jellies and baked goods). Attached are the findings from a study that suggests 30-60 percent of IBS sufferers have fructose intolerance and can be cured by avoiding foods made with fructose. http://www.drmirkin.com/morehealth/3018.html

Do you eat high fat foods? Butter, margarine, mayonnaise, nuts, cream, ice cream, fried food and red meat may aggravate symptoms.

Remember, different foods affect each person with IBS in different ways. Some people develop diarrhea and gas when they eat too much fiber, or certain high-fiber foods. So, it's a good idea to keep a symptom journal to figure out which foods your digestive system can handle.

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, can seriously affect your quality of life. Living with the recurring symptoms of IBS may mean restricted activity levels and increased levels of emotional distress for many individuals. This can increase stress and make symptoms even worse. However, it does not have to be this way.

You can learn to cope with the symptoms of IBS and minimize the disruption to your life. Experimenting with various habits or lifestyle choices can reduce the severity of symptoms. For example, you can wear loose clothing while eating to reduce the discomfort of bloating that is common in many people with IBS. Placing warm heating pads on the abdomen after meals may decrease the intestinal spasms in some people with IBS, helping to reduce abdominal pain.
