There is only one way to find out what someone wants and that is to ask them, no one is a mind reader. Unless she drops hints or tell him then he really has no way of knowing. I mean he could ask her friends if they know. but if there are no hints and no one is telling him anything about rings then he is on his own. Personally I went ring shopping for myself and chose the perfect ring. When my bf and I started talking about being engaged and planning a wedding I knew that it would happen soon and he encouraged me to look around and see what I wanted and liked. There were a lot of couples in the shops ring shopping together. This is something that you are going to have to wear for the rest of your life so why not get something you absolutely love. I found the ring that I wanted and told him about it, and he went to the shop with me to look at it so he knew exactly which one it was. Otherwise he would have had to find a ring on his own and I am happy that I found the ring I wanted for myself because its exactly the one that I want.

Three ways.
Your mother's talking to him.
You already hinted (casually, etc.).
His mother is picking out the ring (you'd be surprised at how many men's moms/sisters etc. even BUY the ring, and keep that secret). Not me, though.. took me 3-4 months of shopping.

When my fiance and I knew that we were to the point of talking about marriage we went and looked at rings together. His dad manages a Jared here and so he told us all about shapes and size, cut and clarity.
It's something that you need to do together so he knows her expectations and she knows if it's way out of budget. ;)
He didn't ask me for 4 months so I had no idea and after we looked he told me that things were tight and it probably wouldn't be for 10 months or so. He completely threw me off track.

Dont know if it is traditional, but my girl picked one out she designed. ( she works in a jewelry store)
I think it is easier when they choose the ring, because it puts off pressure of buying an undesirable ring, making sure it fits etc.

You should be happy with the one that is round and has a diamond on any size on it.
It is not about the ring, it is about the person giving you the ring.
They shouldn't have to ask it you truly love each other.

The best thing he can do is take you to the store and you browse together. I am sure he would be able to tell from your reaction what you prefer. Who knows you may love what he gets you.

I think if they know your sense of style they'll get the right ring.
