My mother is an alcoholic and drinks excessively everyday. My family and I are concerned about her health because he stomach is swelling up underneath her breasts. She is a petite woman who used to have a tiny waist. Now her mid section is swollen like a balloon, her legs remain skinny. She eats like a bird. I know that she has been to the doctor but is not telling anyone in the family ANYTHING about what the doctor says. I have tried and looked up information on the internet but have had no luck to pinpoint what could be going on. I have heard that alcoholics' internal organs tend to swell the more they drink? Has anyone had this experience? Any answers would be great. THank you.

Cirrhosis of the liver. Once it becomes visible it's almost always too late. Eventually the liver can't process anything and they have to drain the liquid off. I watched my father die from this. It got so they had to drain the stomach closer and closer together, (the number of times) trying to balance the timing with his kidney failure. He was on morphine constantly, and it is a horrible painful slow death. (He was in hospital five months then 6 months in a long term care facility). (Palliative care). The liver affects the brain. Sometimes he did not know who he was, let alone whom I was. I am sorry. Every person is different, and the disease progress differently. This is not a pleasant experience by any means, but if I had to go though it again for my father's sake, I would. Most people had cut themselves off from him years ago, including myself to a certain extent. But I had been in contact with him enough that when the time came, I was there for him. Most everyone else chose not to be. I now know why. You need to be a strong person. You need to talk to your mother's doctors. I truly do hope that I am totally wrong about this. May God bless you.

alcohol damages the liver, when the liver begins to fail, fluids back up in the circulation and fluid leaks out into the abdominal cavity, often to the extent of making a person look nine months pregnant, this collection of fluids is called ascites, and is common in alcoholics with end stage liver disease.

It's actually not the stomach, it's the lliver that makes the stomach swell. The liver is failing due to all of the alcohol.
