The fumes from the gasoline would have dispersed where I was standing, Are you saying it would still be dangerous to have the passenger smoking in a car with the window open?

I don't believe a lit cigarette would set off the fumes, it takes an open flame, like when you lite the cigarette, to do that.

Ever since my kids were born if they were in the car with me I would either pay at the pump or pay a little extra to have the gas pumped for me so I could be in the car with them. I am sorry to say that I don't trust anybody when it comes to my kids. I would love to live in a world where I didn't have to worry about what could happen to my kids if I let them out of my sight but I don't think that world exists. These days I get my gas pumped in the morning after I drop my kids off at school and while my kids are now 10 and almost 6 I still wouldn't leave them in the car alone.

Don't think it will set off the fumes but if for some reason a strong wind blows off the RED HOT cigarette bud and fly towards your direction ..... good luck to you! There is a good reason why a "No smoking" sign at the gas pump, its not so much of a possible "Direct" fire but more of a "Indirect" consequences.

I believe the NO SMOKING regulation applies to the entire area of the garage / petrol station, including inside the building.

Only an idiot would smoke near the gas pumps.

If you think you need a open flame, you are a FOOL! Do you think if you raise the temperature of gasoline to its upper explosive limit, it won't ignite???? It does not require a open flame!
If you are so desperate to smoke, stay home!
