Jif, Skippy, Peter Pan, etc. can be left in the cupboard. Organic peanut butter may need to be kept in the fridge, so that may be why did keeps it there. Read the label.

Peanut butter is non-perishable, so it doesn't need to be refrigerated. I think it spreads better if you keep it at room temperature, but it's not bad for it to be in the fridge either.

If it's normal peanut butter like Jif or Skippy, then the pantry is fine. If it's natural, then it has to go in the fridge or it'll go rancid.

In the cupboard.
refrigeration, even of the organic kind, is unnecessary and makes it impossible to spread
peanut butter is basically smashed up peanuts & a bit of sugar or sweetener. Why would you refrigerate that?

Either is fine....the refrige will make the p-nut butter stay fresher much longer, however, it's not normally an issue unless #1 you rarely use pnut butter, or #2 you bought a super huge container.
I prefer pnut butter not stored in the refrige....keeping it cold makes it very difficult to spread until it comes back to room temp!!!

"Natural" peanut butters can be very runny at room temperature so your dad probably put it in the fridge to make it the right consistency.

Pink elephant, Dear I love peanut butter and I keep mine in the cupboard so it is easy to spread ! Stores keep it on the shelf and it is shipped in unrefidgerated trucks. By the way I like your name !

We've always kept our in the cupboard. However if it is all natural or organic it must be kept in the fridge.
But for plain old, plain old keeping it in the fridge vs. cupboard isn't going to keep it fresher longer.
