Status quo is a Latin term meaning the present, current, existing state of affairs. To maintain the status quo is to keep the things the way they presently are.

If the existing state changes than it is not status quo anymore.

Obviously not. The status quo in 1859 in Georgia was legal slave labor. That's hardly the case today.
