Actually I think the way Israel has everyone serve in the military for a couple of years is very good for their society. I think it promotes a sense of unity and we are all in this together - similiarly to what American had in WWII when most men served and it became a bond for that generation.
I don't think this would necessarily mean we have a militaristic society though.

we dont' have a militaristic society...military is free to join, there is no draft or national requirement to serve as in other nations. but i do think people should be trained for national disaster assistance and support etc...nothing wrong with being prepared for a chicom invasion or a nuke set off by a certain religion.

All americans should have to go to and complete basic training but not have to join the military. This would solve many problems. including people being fat because they would have to lose the weight and people being lazy. They should have to complete a physical fitness test each year up to lets say 40 so when they are young enough they can be ready to defend this country if the need arises. Some may think i am crazy, i think i might be. But look at it this way, most politicians have kids they wouldn't go to war so fast if they knew their kids might have to fight. I know this has its flaws but they can be worked out.

Sure, if you want capitalism to collapse.
And if capitalism collapsed, the economy would collapse, and you wouldn't bother fighting for a US with a totally ruined economy.
Sooooo...no. Sparta we aren't...a. And last time I checked, Sparta was absorbed into the larger Greek country--despite their tough military ways, they couldn't function alone.
