I've been taking Celexa and Ativan for about a week and a half. So far, it seems my depression is already lightening up (Celexa) but my anxiety isn't getting any better (Ativan). I know that Ativan is suppose to be pretty strong but it's not working for me. If I go back to my doctor, what will the next step for anxiety medicines be for me? Is there anything else that will help better?

Ativan can take a little time to work, but usually not that much. I don't know what dosage you're taking, but the doctor may increase your dosage amount. I would suggest you just call the office and ask them. The doctor will probably just suggest you up your dosage amount, over the phone, a little. But most importantly, let your doctor know what's going on so they can give you the best care possible. These drugs need to be monitored.

I wouldn't take Ativan for anything unless there were no other choices, the addiction potential and the rate at which people build tolerances to it make it a last choice in my book. Personally, I took classes to learn skills for dealing with the symptoms of anxiety and that works quite well, and when I am overwhelmed as can occasionally happen, I use Xanax. A low dose of Xanax plus the training I availed myself of keeps the anxiety disorder under control.
What you may not be aware of, is that the depression which is coming under control probably masked your anxiety disorder, so now it is coming out with a vengeance.

SSRIs are often used for anxiety. Ativan is very reactionary; that is, you take it in reaction to anxiety. SSRIs are proactive; you take them every day (don't miss a day) and after a couple of weeks (you do need to give them time to work), they start to help you manage your anxiety levels.
