Springfield Armory:
America's first federal armory located in Springfield, MA. Production began in 1795 and an Act of Congress made it an official federal arsenal in 1872. Not associated with the private firm of the same name located in Geneseo, IL.
In recent years, collectors have realized that military specimens in 98%-100% original condition are very rare and desirable in most cases. Since the supply of these guns is so limited, values listed for these condition factors may not be indicative of current market conditions. As always, many collectors agree that it is hard to overpay for a mint, original, military specimen.

Depends on if you like it or not ! Its worth the money if you are correct on the condition however, If you dont like the firearm then I see no reason to drop that much on one. Whatever you decide, the above info is dirrectly from BlueBook and it will give you the value as of today.
Good Luck & Happy Shooting !!!!!

If you've ever watched Antique Roadshow, the history of a specific item like baseball memorabilia and similar things increases the value. If he has the pictures, targets and documentation you have a great "provenance" that links the history to the specific rifle and owner's use of it. Things like that "can" actually increase the value tremendously. What your friend should do is actually take all the information and any more he can get from the previous owner and have the rifle appraised not as a hunting or shooting weapon but as a military / historical item. I'm not saying it will increase the price substantially but there is a good chance of it. Some gal had a question in here months ago about duck decoys and someone told the person they were only worth $60 for the lot. Because I'd seen similar decoys before on the Roadshow, we did some digging and the value is hundreds of dollars EACH. Amazing what you can pick up sometimes.

If you don't want it I will take it!!!! I have not found any lately under a thousand bucks. I am spoiled though, as I bought mine in 1958 for $ 7.50 from the DCM; and paid $ 9.00 to have it shipped by railroad express because they were too long to mail; and UPS and FedEx did not exist. Brand new and encapsulated in cosmoline (DEVILS MIXTURE) which I spent my entire summer of 58 scraping and soaking and cleaning and yadda. Never buy anything gooped over with cosmoline unless you want to spend the next three months working on it.

I bought a sold 03 and 03-A3's for a long time.
The .gov stopped ordering them by the time WWII ended... they started buying them about 1903.
A '1950's' rifle would be something else....so get your facts right.
Value... a really nice 03 will bring around $800 used retail now days. Yours sounds like it's been messed with or a was a parade rifle (or parts of one).... if it's still a good shooter---$400-600 and it may be worth more in parts than as a whole. I'd have to see it to value it.
