I was browsing Ebay and I noticed an Auction for a pic of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Well what exactly is up with the pirate stuff? I don't know much about the religion or fake religion. Is it like the mascot for the religion? I am just a deconverted Mormon and would like to know more. What do you think of this picture?

To learn more about Pastafarianism and The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, please visit one of these websites for info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_spaghetti_monster

The above websites should be very helpful if you wish to learn more about the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The first listed website is the official website. I would also recommend reading The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I haven't read it yet but I plan to and I can't wait.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster is not considered a 'mascot'. He is the creater of the universe according to Pastafarians.

Pastafarianism is a parody religion and its basic purpose it to show the absurdity among all religions, namely Christianity. Also look in to the Unvisible Pink Unicorn if you are interested in similar subjects.

The pirate thing started as the whole "religion" started - with Bobby Henderson's letter to the Kansas State Board of Education regarding Intelligent Design. To demonstrate how the correlations other groups used as evidence of ID were false (as correlation does not mean causation) Henderson includes a correlation between the decrease in number of pirates and increase in global temperature. A call went out for more people to become pirates to help decrease the global temperature. Thus began the pirate craze.

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has scientific data PROVING that there's an inverse link between pirates and global warming -- that is, the fewer pirates there have been over the centuries, the more the earth heats up. Clearly, the solution is that the world needs more pirates.

That's why priests of the CotFSM dress in pirate regalia when conducting services....

Arrrgh, ye wench - If it needs be, ye can always wear the magik underpants on the outside as pirate pantaloons - Pastaferism on a bloody budget (don't forget the hat and patch)

Deconvert seems an odd turn of phrase. Isn't it more like "The lights just turned on.." instead? This a perfect example of 'using your noodle' to find truth.

One of the tenets of the FSM religion is that when giving sermons, its practicioners must dress in full pirate regalia.

That's because of their assertion that the decline in pirates is directly inverse to the rise in global temperatures, therefore, more pirates would reverse global warming (it's a satirical poke at causality).

Pirates are the FSM's chosen people. Did you know you share 95% of your DNA with a Chimp, but 99% with a Pirate? May you be touched by His Noodley Appendege.

It's been wildly proved that since the FSM loves pirates, the decrease in the amount of pirates have triggered global warming and other catastrophes.

This should explain the connection, it's the letter sent to the Kansas School Board by the guy who came up with the FSM.

It seems to be a satire on Christianity.

Not exactly the cream of the crop when it comes to satirizing Christianity, but the painter obviously has some talent in oil painting.

Deconverted Mormon? Do you recall currently where the 'special underwear' thing comes from with Mormons? If so, what text?
