Looks can skip several generations. I once worked with a girl whose family was Italian. They all looked Italian with the exception of her brother, who was red-haired with fair skin. I asked about him and she said that way back in their family tree, someone married a red-headed Irish lad and her brother was the splitting image of him. There is no rhyme or reason to the gene pool!

Yes, your parents carry recessive genes.
If they are strong recessive genes, only one parent has to have them to pass them on to their children.
Now take eye coloring. Brown eyes are dominant over blue eyes. Therefore a brown eyed person can still carry some very strong recessive blue eyed genes and if he/she marries another brown eyed person, it is quite likely they will have blue eyed child.
Now, if a person is blue or hazel eyed, any recessive brown eyed genes are very weak.
There is an old fallacy that two blue eyed people cannot have a brown eyed child. That is not so. If both blue or hazel eyed persons each have a brown eyed parent, then the combining of the genes from both parents could produce some brown eyed children.
Pigmentation is the same way. There is a fallacy that a child cannot be darker than the
darkest parent. However, if both parents had a parent with darker pigmentation then they can produce a child with darker pigmentation.

I happen to look more like my paternal grandfather, too! :D
I don't think it necessarily skips a generation, but family members do resemble each other for basic genetic reasons - identification and association!
Your parents carry allele combinations passed on for countless generations from each of their families and the combinations often result in offspring who appear like family members who are closer in the genetic chain. Obviously, the closest link is your parents or siblings, but it is not too uncommon to more closely resemble some second-tier relatives.

Not odd at all. My husband looks exactly like his grandfather and nothing like his parents. We have a picture of his grandfather, grandmother, and their children that was made during the depression and my 4 year old grandson is convinced that the man in the picture is his paw paw (my husband).

I don't think it's odd at all. Growing up I didn't favor my parents at all either, although I looked frighteningly like my aunt (dad's sister) and my cousin, to the point where some of my friends thought I had been keeping a twin sister hidden. As I've gotten older, however, my looks have changed some, and I do look like my mom now.

My uncle looks like a spitting image of his grandfather. It's a question of genes passed down the generations There are certain rules in genetically transferred genes, like a black guinea pig and a white guinea pig will produce a mixture of black, white or spotted black/white offspring, put in a simple way. Look up genetics on google.

My Mom always told me that, behavior-wise and appearance-wise, these things skip generations. I have seen many people who resemble their parents (both sexes) and many who resemble their grandparents (both sexes). However, I would say that most people do not resemble either their parents or grandparents! Some do resemble aunts and uncles...
Your DNA is unique: however, half of your DNA comes from each parent; thus, one quarter of your DNA comes from each grandparent. No matter: with so many genes, etc., so many factors affecting one's appearance (diet, stress, work, weather...basically everything) it's a wonder that anyone resembles relatives!
