For the Indianapolis 500 this year, Helio Castroneves set the pole with a speed of 225.817 mph. At the 2006 Allstate 400 at Indianapolis, Jeff Burton set the pole with a speed of 182.778.
Even though IRL is faster, NASCAR will always provide better racing.

Indy cars are faster. Indy cars have so much down force that they hardly ever have to lift off the gas at ovals. I am not sure how much you know about Nascar, but there is a new driver in Nascar that came from F1 (similar to indy) and since Nascar cars are so much more heavier, and dont create as much down force, he is having problems getting used to the nascar.
Indy cars are lighter also (1600 lbs) while the nascar weights 3600lbs. Both are powered by V8s. An Indy car can create 5,000 lbs of downforce running at 220, and since the care weights 1600lbs, if they were to maintian the 200MPH speed they could run upside down. This kind of down force creates the speeds that the cars run, and also allows them to go much faster than Nascar.
Also nascars never get much over 200 mph for safety reasons. Nascar and their engineers have said that 200mph is the magic number for the 3600lb car to actually get air in a crash, meaning the car would flight through the air uncontrolled, and this could even put the fans at risk.

Well the speed for a qualifying lap at the indy 500 this year was 228mph as opposed to 183mph for the Nascars at the same circuit. Thats quite a difference...and its the same at all tracks. The NASCARS cant compete in terms of speed because they dont have the downforce to keep them safely on the road at higher speeds. Look at it this way if the racing car has wings it is probably faster than one that doesnt

Indy cars are capable of speeds of around 228 miles per hour. Before they added restrictor plates and various spoilers and aero packages NASCAR driver Bill Elliot was reaching 213 miles per hour in the 1980s. Today most NASCAR racecars don't go any faster than around 200 and are usually around the 180 to 190 range in top speed.

Indy Cars are faster. They go well into the 200's and pul as much as 6G's at some tracks. They are incredibly fast.
Oh, and for all of you who keep answering with Indy/F1. They are two totally different leagues of racing. F1 has bigger tires, engine, and chasis. F1 is always on a road course; and unlike IRL, F1 will be around a decade from now.

Indy cars may be faster but NASCAR is more interesting to watch, in my opinion.

Indy/F1 go-karts are faster, the are only 4 wheels, engine, seat that is basically it.....Even though Bill Elliott ran something like 200++ MPH way back when....Restrictor Plates were added to keep the speeds down at speedway's for safety reason's...
