You should check the system requirements of Vista. If you were running windows 98 on your system it is very likely that your systems will not be able to support Windows Vista. Vista has a fancy user interface that looks its best if you have a graphics card that supports Direct X9 along with other features...
The system requirements vary with the version of Vista that you go in for.
You need to have at least a 1 Ghz processor , 1 Gb of RAM and 15 GB of free disk space..
for more about system requirements have a look at this site...

Personally I would recommend that you use Windows Xp Home edition or Professional edition. There aren't too many softwares that are Vista compatible yet...

My question to you is how old is your laptop & is Windows 98 the original OS? Seeing that the laptop is running Windows 98 and not XP, you probably wouldn't want to do that. Comparing Vista or XP, Windows 98 doesn't take up as much space on your hard drive. Your laptop probably wouldn't meet the system requirements of getting certain upgrades anyway. If your laptop is as old as I'm thinking, you would probably want to spend your money else where rather than an OS upgrade. You'll need far more than a new OS to be satisfied with the performance of your computer. If you want to upgrade try Windows ME.

You cannot directly upgrade 98 to Vista. You will have to upgrade Windows 98 to at least Windows 2000 before upgrading to Vista.

The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor works with 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista. It will not work with Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.

If your computer is a hold over from the days of Windows 98, then it is probably not nearly powerful enough for Windows Vista. Anything more than 6 months to a year old probably can not run Vista. If you go to microsoft.com, they have a Vista Advisor that can run on your PC and tell you if you can run Vista on it.
Also, you can not directly upgrade from 8 to Vista. You would have to go to XP first, then to Vista. Even then, you usually introduce problems with drivers going from 98 to XP, so it would be better to back up your data, format the drive, and do a clean install of Vista.

Not likely -- even the best computer when 98 was out probably doesn't have the hardware to be able to handle Vista. And while you can upgrade your hardware, it is likely that the cost is prohibitive.
You would be better off purchasing a new laptop. You can find fairly inexpensive ones out today that are 10 x better than what you had.
