Why wasn't it just a natural trait for people to have?

The parable is told by Jesus to illustrate that compassion should be for all people, and that fulfilling the spirit of the Law is just as important as fulfilling the letter of the Law. Jesus puts the definition of neighbor into an enlarged context, beyond what people usually thought of as a neighbor.

Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and all your mind (Deuteronomy 6:5), and the parallel law of "Love your neighbor as yourself"

Could humanity survive if everyone obeyed the law but could give a hoot owl about there neighbor?

I think yu missed the point of this parable.

In jesus time the jews hated smartians and vice versa

in the parable two jews passed on by the other side of the road and ignored the dying fellow jew

the smartian was the one who stopped and helped.

The point jesus was making was to show compassion to ALL not just the people who you like or who suits you to.

Compassion and goodness are not natural traits for anyone. We are a corrupt people whose first instinct is to look out for number one. Once you have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and accept the Lord Jesus you take on a different nature, wherein you are no longer blinded by the world and its tendency to be a lover of self.

If they obeyed the Law, they would care for their neighbor. But Jesus came and fulfilled the law. We do good to live by His example!

You keep posting this but never listen to what the other side has to say. When people say it takes a village to raise a child, it has implications for what it takes for genes to survive and be passed on. If in our past we could not get along with people in our community, they wouldn't help us and our kids might easily die. No passing on of genes. Do we need to be reminded about that? Yes. Does it require God to tell us the value and importance, not necessarily. Tho I am glad He does.

So you're saying the only source of compassion is the Bible, because the Bible tells you so?

Your logic is flawless.

It's OK, you still have the pretty red hat.
