I'm sure many people ask questions that ask more for an opinion than an answer, and the asker has already formed his/her opinion. So I think that, not all, but many of the questions asked here are swayed in the direction the asker wants it to, so that the answerers can form an opinion similar to the authors, undermining the opposing opinion. The questions sometimes seem to be rhetorical, and instead of truly asking a question, some people imply their own answer in their question/introduction.

Mostly to provoke thought. Both mine and the communities.
Sometimes I really want to know something factual. That is not usually in the R&S zoo though

Both. I think it is good to want to know something and to provoke thought. Sometimes an answer can be short, but it does not provoke, does not cause pause. A good discussion gives something and take something with it.

I intend to provoke thought most of the time, it doesn't really seem to get anywhere, it just feels like preaching to the choir, or reasoning with toddlers.

Most do it to provoke. They provoke hatred and spread hatred.
When I post - it is because I truly want to know something.

In R & S sometimes, I feel its because they want to tear down the other side to make themselves feel superior. I don't usually answer the questions that clearly are insults posing as queries.

It's seeing how well you can snake around in the snake pit without getting beaten by an angry mob, be it Christian, Atheist, or "other." So far I'm not doing so good.
