I think the question if it is abusive to hit your child with a belt, regardless of the number of times.
I am not sure if we can come with a magical number that defines the limit between been abusive or not.
I think the real question here if it is abusive or is it OK to hit your child with a belt?
It is very weird, and I can't believe I am going to say this, but it looks like this depends in which country you are. In the US, I think that's definitely abusive. In Latin America, it is not.
This leads us to another debate. But in the meantime, I would go with the idea that hitting anyone regardless their age with anything for any reason, is abuse. This approach will help us think twice or 3 times before we hurt someone else, and hence come up with a different approach.

Well you have to figure on how old is the child is first. But I personally think America has gone to hell because everybody makes such a big deal with giving your child a spanking. Now days if you spank your child you can be put away for abuse but now days kids are stealing from thier parents, doing drugs, having sex. Watch some of these shows on t.v. like those nanny shows and see how those kids act hitting thier parents and only way your suppose to get on them about it is ground them. Thats crazy i think a good old fashion spanking will go a long way. My friend beat her mom so bad her tooth went through her lip and her eyes were swelled shut and all that girl got was probation. Now what if a parent was to do something like that? You wouldn't be seeing them for a while. Now I think just 3 pops aint going to hurt anything as long as you aint wailing on the child. Some men really dont klnow how strong they are and hit thier kids way to hard. I would Just watch it it's ok to a point but I just wouldnt ever cross that line.

spare the rod, spoil the child. That does not mean to hit him so hard he has a bruise. Just enough to let him know that it hurts to do something bad. If the child is just a baby and is not at the age of knowing right from wrong then do NOT spank him with a belt, it will only make him look at you like you are the enemy and he will not bond with you if he feels threatened. A punishment is something you do out of love not anger, so remain calm. Afterwards talk to him about it.

Depends on the age.
Make sure the punishment matches the crime.
Butts were made for spanking.
Legally, I think it is considered child abuse. I read a story in which a mother slapped her kid for using foul language and she was arrested and charged with child abuse.
* For all giving the "use your hand advise" with my four year old daughter she will tell you that I do not spank hard enough to get her attention. I just dont' have the strength.

I think it's abuse if you hit them even once with a belt. I never hit my kids at all...not with a hand or anything else (they are 17 & 15). We always tell our kids from the time they are little not to hit others but then we turn around and hit them? What kind of lesson is that? If you got pulled over for speeding and the cop hit you because what you did was wrong, would you sue the cop for abuse or whatever you may want to call it?

No No No....it is not abuse to hit your kids with a belt 3 times or more if they deserve it...I'm 18 years old and my mom used to hit me for illegitimate reasons such as "getting a B not an A on my report cart" but sometimes i knew i did wrong and i knew the consequences and i still did the things i wasn't suppose to do so when i got home my momma was there ready to beat my a$$. incredible how moms know when you did something wrong before it happens. also what is wrong with hitting children after plenty of times of talking if talking doesnt work. my mother suffers because she use to beat me now that i am older but to be real with you i wouldnt have it any other way, the beatings taught me how to be strong and take responsibilities for my actions and to always remember that there is a consequence to every action...as for that lady that got arrested for hitting her child for her language, i dont think she should have gotten arrested...swell them lips up for cursing and bad language...biggest problem this society has now i believe with crime is that the parents are afraid of their children because children now have the power to call child services...obviously if there is obvious abuse going on then fine that parent is not entitled to moan and groan about getting arrested for beating they kids. BUT if after you take away the Playstations and Xboxs and you take away priveleges (tv, going outside, computers, friends, etc....) then if they can't learn that way then a couple of good whoopings is what they need. a whooping now can save them from going to jail, a hospital, the morgue, or even worse end up cripple or with a disabilty later on in their lives. my father did the same thing but he was more passive, plus one of his beatings was the same as 10 of my moms so once he told me once twice and the third time i knew the next time i did it it was that belt. my parents are now divorced but they are still great parents and have taught me alot of what the world is really like, they have come up from underneath the dirt and have made themselves in to something incredable through me and my sisters, no matter how mad i get at them i would never change them b/c they are the only unconditional love i have ever had. the beatings, advice, love support and all they have given me when i was younger, has prepared me for the beatings life has given me and will continue giving me until i die and for that i thank them.

Yes it is considered abuse and you could go to jail if anyone reported it! Using a forign object to strike and punish a child is horrible! Striking a child for any reason is bad but if you 'spank' the bum once with your hand that is allowed my law. and a moderate spank not hard enough to leave a bruise!

Of course it's abuse to hit your child with a belt 3 times. You my friend, have a problem. I wouldn't be surprised if that child called child services on you. That is very bad parenting. You should be punished!
