The healthy height vs weight sometimes seems unreasonable to me, like why I'm 5'4" and as a size 6, I would be considered overweight. I'm currently a size 4, and if I was to be 5 pounds heavier, I would be considered overweight? I definitely don't look big.

It isn't a doctor's weight chart, and it isn't an edict from Apollo. The doctors get those charts from actuarial tables. The actuaries do statistical work for life insurance companies. Reason doesn't have anything to do with it. Statistically, if you fall within that weight range, you live longer. This is known from studying the weight of people when it's time for the insurers to pay the death benefit, which the doctor, not unreasonably, would like to delay in your case. If you prefer to be a reasonable corpse, go right ahead.

Keep in mind that people carry weight differently. I'm 5'4" as well and if I was at the recommended weight for my age and height, I would be a size 8 or 10. If I was to go any smaller than that, I would be extremely underweight. But that's the way my body is made.

The chart refers only to what is supposed to be an average person. It does not take into account people with larger bone mass or even people who are more muscular than average. For example, a bodybuilder with almost no body fat will weigh in as obese on the chart. Just use the chart as a general guide and not as an absolute. YOU know if you are overweight or not.

I don't think the chart you're talking about is meant to be so cut and dry. I think your BMI number is more important...if it's saying your moderately overweight or more, then you should be concerned. Everyone's weight fluctuates a little bit...if a doc is saying this stuff to you..go see someone new and FAST.

the weight charts are BS. you shouldnt be judged on how much you weigh because there are different body types and if people are muscular they will weigh more. I personally think it's what you look like that counts, not what a weight chart says.

i know what you mean.

but, it goes by your weight and not your size (pants). i can't see someone who wears a size 6 (or 4) can be over weight.

Unless you're like a sausage in those sizes.

Yes! I have friends that are slim & fit but weigh a lot more than you would ever think! Some people just weigh more w/o being fat.

They for me are too high a weight - I am small framed and if I weigh what it says I should weigh, I look fat.
