a have asked many of my young software pros as to the functioning of the internet but for my loss, i could not absorb what those professionals were saying.could any body throw light for this layman in this field.incidetally i am a doctor.

There is a body that coordinates IP numbers and names. There are a series of large main frame computers that provide these lists to users although there are thousands of servers that have at least part of the list for local coordination. The internet is so useful that these computers provide a service for free to others - unlike the phone company for example. The whole design of the net was intended to survive a nuclear attack and its operation is very diffuse - if you ask for a web page, it may come from clear across the world or actually be handed over from a storage file much closer because someone else asked for it recently.

www was first started for militry purposes in usa then it was made private slowly by some famous university actually i excetly dont know its name but i think it was oxford. after that slowly slowly it started becoming private and as the people started using computers they started using www . after some time www came overseas and it became common around the world. as the age of communication was growing it started becoming more faster and reliable and cheaper unlike previously.
well now days it is operated by different servers around the world.
