I have a Ford Focus 1.8 petrol and about 3 years ago had to have a new exhaust system fitted (NOT the catalytic converter). I opted for a genuine Ford exhaust and wondered roughly how long the exhaust should last.

It depends on where and how often you drive. If it rains or snows a lot where you live, the exhaust can easily rust and break. Some cars can have the same exhaust system for the life of the car, while others can have it come apart within a couple years. I used to have a Focus RS, and the exhaust on that lasted for the 5 years I owned the car. I now have an Escort, and have had it for 4 years and replaced the exhaust twice now.
