I know one side is ground. But if he only put something in the positive side, would he still be hurt.

Yes. The chances are very high. Your child will be completing a circuit to whatever he/she is grounded to (the floor, the wall).

And there are three connections to a modern 110-120 volt outlet - 1 - Power, 2- Common (completes the circuit back to the breaker box) & 3 - Ground ( the one you always need an adapter for in older non-grounded homes)

If he/she contacts the Power side, they will become the path of least resistance as described in Ohm's Law.

It is very possible that he will get shocked, as his body can become the conductor between the "hot" side and the "ground." It is also not possible to guarantee which side of the outlet is wired to the hot lead, so Don't Let the Child Push ANYTHING into an electrical outlet.

First it is dangerous, but yes and no. I depends on the type of outlet.

If you stick the fork in only one side of a standard 120 volt outlet - no, but if you stick it in both at the same time - yes.

You will get shocked/killed sticking a fork in an outlet that outputs 240 volts, even if you only stick it in on side.

This applies to the US and Canada

My brother flew across the room when we were little he stuck a screwdriver in the outlet :) wait a minute maybe that explains why he is so odd grin sorry not answering your question but I couldn't help but share this story grin
