If Adam had been allowed to eat from the tree of life, He would have become immortal.

Lest means should.

I hate to answer a question with a question but here goes.
what is the tree of life? in my studies I have found that the tree of life is Jesus as in the scripture he made mention of the fact that he was in the garden in studding you will learn that there were two trees in the garden that God made specific mention of one good one bad the bad represents satan and the good one represents the truth the way and the life of man this being said, lest would mean unless. Man had sined and the only way out of that is the truth the way and the life but Adam choose not to put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life thus he was put out of the garden to live his life in shame

as for those who have said that it means for fear that are you saying That God had fear of what Adam might do? God has no fear and certainly not of his own creation

Nosnod may have hit the nail on the head. I just saw it after I posted my answer.

That is a very good question and you got some great answers. It's interesting to note that this was not one of the trees that was not forbidden to eat from. Only the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

If I remember right In Revelations we know that believers will eat from the tree of life.

If Adam and Eve had eaten of the tree then, then who knows that all human beings would have been born immortal. Also man living immortally was not part of God's plan before the creation of the universe. Also there is a time and season for every purpose done under heaven. And only believers, those who never disobeyed God's commands are allowed to eat of it. I suppose that would be my best guess.

There are many issues I had not thought of. Perhaps you have your own best answer for this. But that is one that is food for thought for me. Much appreciated.

In this context the word means, maybe, perhaps, or possibly, indicating some uncertainty about the matter. If I had just been told that I was going to die physically and spiritually I would certainly have gone for the tree of life as soon as possible. I think God was well aware of this and there was no uncertainty in the action taken. He made quite sure that no-one took anything from the tree of life. The writer seems to have introduced the uncertainty so as to soften the basic nature of fallen humanity.

lest - conjunction = for fear that used after an expression denoting fear or apprehension *worried lest she should be late* *hesitant to speak out lest he be fired*
Is this version clearer?
Genesis 3:22-24
22 And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever."
23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

If he puts forth his hand, in other words if he were to reach out and pick fruit from the tree of life and eat it and live forever while possessing the knowledge of evil.

Lest= in case

Adam and Eve were created to live eternaly... when they disobayed God and ate fro the Tree of The Knowledge of Good and Evil they were punished by losing their eternal life in the garden. And they were kicked out.

There was another tree, The Tree of life, that could have kept them immortal on earth... but they were not to have access to it either... and no mortal has since had access to it... that is why it is hidden and guarded.

It means, "for fear that." Below is a link to a search on the word, "lest" in the scriptures. Looking at other places the same word is used can help with understanding.

There were 2 trees in the garden of eden that were off limits to Adam and Eve......they could eat of every tree to satisfaction only the tree of knowledge of good and bad they were to avoid..in fact they weren't supposed to even touch it.

If they passed the first test they were going to be rewarded with everlasting life when God would let them eat from the tree of life.
