it is just studs. in some cases insulation is behind. to test this theory knock on the panneling and you can feel the studs and the open space.

I am sure there are studs under it. The paneling needs to be secured to something. May also be glued onto wall board. I have seen this done. Find a joint in the paneling and carefully try to pry it up. That should answer your question. Good luck.

In houses in my area, it is usually old plaster with lath behind that and then the studs, it is a real mess to clean up (very dusty). Try banging on the wall, and see if you hear any crumbling or falling, if it is plaster and lath you will hear it falling between the studs.

usually there is sheetrock to be sure and push on the paneling and if it moves in real easy there is nothing but studs there. if it is hard then there is sheetrock
