For the Jews, its ''Ethics first, faith later'', but for the Christians, its the opposite. I think the two together are best

I think that eternal salvation depends on how well you tried to live a good life.....good works implies an act of charity.living a good life begins everyday by waking and trying to be the best person you can be.
God's grace is not to be confused with God's law
God's graces are his gift to us

Good works are not what saves a person. If a person repents right before he dies he really does not have time to do the good works thing so this saying is not right and it is a misunderstood thing between Protestants and Catholics. Grace is all that is needed and Catholics know Jesus can save whoever he wants to but, mostly what Catholics are saying is works are proof that one is saved because with the grace of God working in them the person must get up and do good also. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples to say you must become like servants and also the Apostles did not lock themselves up in the upper room after Pentecost ---they got out there and did stuff.

Your kids tell you every day how much they love you and accept your grace. You are a very loving and benevolent father.
Then they go out and disobey all of your rules, do nothing you ask of them and produce nothing.
Do you:
1) Reward them and shower them with gifts
2) Show them the consequences of their actions.
Do you really believe God the Father will look at this any differently?

The ONLY way to have eternal Salvation is to accept Gods Grace. Romans 10:9 - That if you confess with your mouth, the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Salvation is a free gift to all who come to God in The Way He prescribes... no mortal work is required
It is the part about doing it The Way God prescribes that is the hard part for most... That is why most will never make it.

Any fool who thinks he can profess acceptance of God and turn around and start breaking commandments because he is forgiven in advance is out of his gourd. You need to plant a new gourd garden.

If it's a question between the thoughts and actions, I'd say actions should trump thoughts.
