Thank you for a lot of the wonderful suggestions about welcoming our newest friend to our church!
He really stands out in our congregation, and is an awesome addition to our "family".
My daughter was working on a Sunday School project with her friend Megan (Mee-gun, not May-gun) and they decided to draw a painting of Jesus and a flock of sheep.
To send a message of welcoming to our newest friend, my daughter decided to color one of the sheep black.
I want to give our newest good friend this painting, but my nag of a wife keeps telling me it might be offensive. I haven't even looked in her direction today, as I am upset that she is putting negative thoughts into my brilliant daughters mind.
What is the opinion of you people on this matter? I'm correct, correct?

Friend,
It sounds like your heart is in the right place, but are you sure this is the right thing to do.
There are cultural differences that may make things uncomfortable in the long run and doesn't the Bible say we should separate ourselves from sin?
One more thing, maybe your wife needs to learn her proper roll as a woman and stop giving the man advice.

It's nice of you to want to include the new member of your church, but yes, your wife is correct, that would be very offensive. It would make the new member feel uncomfortable if the painting was given to him with one black sheep. The new member could feel as though it is implied that he is not welcomee because of the connotation with black sheep. Seriously, make cookies for him as a welcom gift. Don't point out the obvious. That is just rude.

You should have your dear little daughter repaint the black sheep standing apart from the rest of the flock, so your new colored 'brother' will be sure to notice it. Then give him the painting, in spite of what your nagging wife says.

Yes you are correct. I think it would be a wonderful gesture if you gave your newest member the painting. It is from a child. What better gift to give than the gift of acceptance???

I think it's great, but I can see where your wife would be concerned. She is apparently afraid he might be overly sensitive, but I suspect he's not.
Please don't call your wife a nag. Do you not know that you too, will be judged? And, by the SAME measure you use?

Hey I thought we mentioned the "colored" thing yesterday. I think your wife if correct.
Why don't you just forget that they are African American and treat them like anyone else. The black sheep thing is offensive and is singling them out.

"Brilliant" is sending a young child to be indoctrinated in Sunday School before the child can think for herself.
The earlier you start, the harder it is to break from later right?
Why don't you let your daughter grow up and decide what works for her when she is old enough to understand?
A: Because if you did, you wouldn't be able to brainwash her

Kermie,
You might want to refer to him as a ***** rather than a "colored person". We are all people of color. His color just happens to be different than yours. GOD made each of us different from the other. I would think that you would agree with your wife no matter what. She should always be right, no matter what. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds
