Dedicate the day to the Lord. It is a day for service and worship. Do not engage in activities that would deny others the opportunity to observe the day.

Keeping the Sabbath holy is a commandment meant for Jews, and it means refraining from 39 types of work.

This should be a "jews only please" question as today's christians are no longer under the mosaic law covenant nor bound by the 600+ laws that include so many things that make you "unclean" such as touching a dead body, or the numerous times a year you had to sacrifice a specific animal. If you are saying we are to keep the sabbath, then we have to keep all 600+ laws including the animal sacrifice and the festival of booths and trips to jerusalem. Don't think too many christian faiths want to enforce ALL of those laws.

Usually we think of "not working" on the Sabbath, but I think that it just means taking a break from the work week and having time to reflect upon God and His goodness. I think one reason that we are called on not to work on the Sabbath is because God in His wisdom knew that our bodies and minds need a break from work - and this was one way of getting it. In this modern world, sometimes we have to work on the Sabbath, but I think God understands. Just do the best that you can....sorry about this short answer, by the way - you could almost write a book on this subject...

Putting away labor, resting, and putting your mind on God.. That last thing.. Well you should do that everyday.. The Sabbath has nothing to do with what day of the week you go to church. When I am at church, well I wouldn't call it rest... So if you wish to keep the sabbath remember it starts Friday at sundown. enjoy it but remember the Sabbath was made for us, we weren't made for the Sabbath.... Jim

Atheist here, but this question interests me, as there are so many people who go on and on and on and on about the 10 Commandments.
People keep mentioning not working or making others work.
So, what about watching televised sports?
I would think that's a no-no too.
It's not "holy" (praying for a touchdown doesn't count as holy activity), you're making other people work for you -- in a sense.
But I thought doing or watching sports was against the Commandment.

To be a bit more specific on the work, no work at all unless it is in service to God. Also, everyone I know has always said don't make other people work. So no going shopping, going out to eat, etc., etc.

For Catholics, firstly it means attending Mass. That's the most important requirement.
In addition, it means that work is to be avoided if possible (certain jobs are exempted) and that the day should be spent (as much as possible) in particular reverence for God.

The 4th commandment says to rest and remember your Creator. We're not suppose to work or allow our servants or cattle to work! We have 24 hrs. to spend with God. Check out www.3abn.org
