Yes, the gentleman does buy the engagement ring.

I know several people have already said you need to have the ring already when you propose, but I would suggest that if you have any question about what she'd like that you take her along to pick the ring after you get that yes. After all, she's the one who's going to wear it for the rest of her life. Make sure it's something she likes.

Left to his own devices, my husband would probably have gotten me a small diamond because he knew engagement rings are usually diamonds. Well and good except that I dislike diamonds. In fact, I didn't want a stone at all. Luckily he asked me what I did want and I was able to show him the sterling silver frog of my dreams. He was confused, but he saved a bundle and I smile every single day when I look at my engagement ring.

Had he given me that diamond, I would have taken it, and I would have been okay with it...but I would never have loved it. Give the lady a chance to love her ring.

You don't have to buy the ring first, but you have to buy the ring. If I were a guy I'd find out if she was ready to get married and ask first THEN buy the ring. If you ask after you buy the ring, what do you do if she says no? Take it back and look like an idiot?

Yes, the groom buys the bride's ring, and the bride buys the groom's ring.
Traditionally, you buy the engagement ring before you ask her, and present it to her. Then later you buy a wedding band to go with it. But some couples like to buy the ring(s) together.

Generally the guy should have her ring when he proposes. A man should offer a ring when proposing. I suggest you check out other questions on here dealing with rings, choosing a ring, proposing. There's a lot of good info here for you to access. Good luck!!
