Studies on caffeine have been inconclusive. Some suggest that there is nothing particularly bad about it, aside of the fact that it dehydrates you a little, and that moderately used it can even be a good pick-me-up. Other studies suggest it could cause high blood pressure. But is it the caffeine, or the sugar and milk that some people dump into it? If you are dumping a lot of sugar and milk into your coffee, then THAT can add up and cause you problems. Otherwise, it may be alright. It is definitely still up for debate by nutritionists and doctors.

5 cups is much by ordinary standards. Whether it is bad or good? Well, depends on how well nourished you are. Let me explain:
There is an ingredient in coffee called caffeine which is an anti nutrient of calcium, B vitamins n Vitamin C. Every cup of average coffee contains approximately 50mg of caffeine which may set you back by as much as 25 mg of Vit C per serving. Given that you take 5 cups of coffee a day, your total caffeine intake could be anywhere between 125mg to 500mg per day, which could deplete as much as 125 to 250mg of Vit C per day. So, if you had supplemented with between 500 to 1000mg of Vitamin C before or after your coffee, you will still be fine. As for calcium and the B vitamins, I do not know the precise figures you might lose from your system, so it is best to supplement some calcium and B vitamins as long as you continue to drink 5 cups of coffee a day. Otherwise, you might run the risk of having weak or porous bones and stress out your adrenals in the middle or long term. For that reason, it would be wise to take a break from 5 cups a day every now and then.
Now the good news. Coffee also contains two other substances, theophylline and theobromine which help to burn fat and increase metabolism. The downside is, if you are intolerant to either caffeine or theophylline and theobromine, you may feel the jitters, mild heart palpitations, slight increase in blood pressure or have difficulty falling asleep at night. Now you decide whether it is good or bad. :) :)

5 cups is a good bit. It's been known to cause people ulcers (not b/c of the caffeine) but lots of people drink a good bit of coffee. And I suppose it depends on why you drink it (like what would the effects of not drinking it be- poor performance at work?)

No, I don't see how it could be harmful in having 5 cups a day. I drink coffee all day.

Drinking a lot of coffee is bad for anyone. I would suggest cutting back to one regular size cup a day.

Whatever gets you stimulated. It sounds like you have developed a tolerance. Lower the amount of coffee you drink to one or two, after a while it will feel better.
