I have already had my gall bladder removed a few years ago. When my blood was recently tested again, my liver enzymes are still elevated. I also have frequent diarrhea and gas, and I know elevated liver enzymes can be an indication of gastrointestinal problems. Anyone have any suggestions?

The liver enzymes are different than the liver
function tests, but they tend to interchange
these words to indicate both. The liver
function test, show how the liver is able to
perform the functions needed in order for the
body to live healthy.
These are the following: bilirubin, albumin,
INR, PT and Ptt.
The true liver enzymes are as follows:
ALT, AST, and Alkaline Phosphatase.

The ALT is produced mostly by the liver and
is found in the liver cells, when there is damage
to the liver cells, this enzyme is released and
show up more in the blood. The AST on the
other hand, is not only in the liver, but other
things like the bones, heart, etc and can be
released if any of the organs have a problem.
The Alkaline Phosphatase usually shows up
higher in blood tests if the biliary area is
involved.

I have below listed a couple of sites. The one
show what your lab work sheet would probably look like, you can click on the test you want to
read more about.

The other one is a site where you can type
the name of the test in and they will explain
how it is done, why it is done, and what
the results may be.

I want to add a little more here:
The liver makes a product known as bile,
once this bile is made, it goes to the gall
bladder to be stored and concentrated until
you digest fats going through the intestines
from the stomach. This bile is then released
and travel down tube like structures to the
intestine to help in this digestion. Since the
bile is no longer being stored in the gallbladder,
this bile is, more than likely, released right
into the intestines and this change could cause
you these symptoms. I would check with
your doctor to see if you could be given
medication for this. Diarrhea can become
serious because it can change the electrolytes
in your body if it continues on too long.

I hope this is of some benefit to you.

I recommend a couple all natural supplements - Optiflora and Liver DTX.

Optiflora is a two product system that includes Probiotic (Bifidus & Acidophilus...microflora) + Prebiotic (FOS...food source for microflora). Guaranteed delivery of 500 million live microflora to the intestines. This will be very helpful in controlling any gastrointestinal problems.

Liver DTX is a botanical blend including milk thistle extract, dandelion, and turmeric that helps flush out toxins, thwart free radicals and support liver regeneration and is very effective in lowering elevated liver enzymes.

Hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me with questions.

After I had my gallbladder removed, I moved straight to the woes of colitis. Nearly 40 years later, I still have diarrhea and gas. My liver enzymes are checked regularly and they are fine. Alcohol consumption will elevate liver enzymes.

My liver test being elevated was caused by pancreatitis, which in turn was caused by a gall stone stuck in my pancreas. However, high cholesterol is caused by eating too much cholesterol causing foods, and doing anything to combat it, like exercise and diet. So, hard to say. You would be better off asking a qualified doctor.
