I've worked at a newspaper for the past four years. At one time I really enjoyed my job, but the past couple of months have been very trying. I live in a small town, and the job is affecting my home life. My editor made me write a couple of exposes on some elected officials who were arrested, and now my life outside of work is crazy.

I've been followed, I can't prove it, but I believe by one of the people I wrote about. They got up on my bumper and took a picture of my car. And now, I can't even go into the local Wal-Mart without getting a hard time.

I don't want to quit on a bad note, or before I find another job, but this is ridiculous.

Also my husband and I are trying to have a baby. His job has no insurance, and mine does. If I switch jobs there is a very good possibility I'll become pregnant within months of being hired, which is really unfair to that company. I don't plan to go back to work after having kids.

What should I do? Talk to my boss, quit, or stick it out?

I should add that my editor doesn't see the public reaction as a big deal. He just wants me to have a tougher skin.

Not sure how many other jobs are available where you live, but generally, it is harder to find work in a smaller town than in a larger one. So I would suggest you stay at your current job, but try to talk to your boss about writing an editorial, explaining that you have nothing personal against the politicians that were arrested. I would try to stay to yourself for the next couple months, which will give them time to forget about what happened and move on to something else. Try talking to some close friends about it, and give your side of the story, they might be able to tell others that you really aren't a bad person. You probably don't want to quit your job, no matter what happens, especially if you are trying to have a baby. You might find yourself in a position where you can't find another job, and may not be able to afford the baby.

Since it is a small town, could you write a small article in the paper to get this out in the open? Talk to your boss about that. You after-all did nothing wrong. You did what you were asked to do. Nothing more or less. The truth of the matter is, these things usually blow over rather quickly. I'm from a small town as well, so I know how you must feel. People take things very personally in a town like that. But, in time they will get over it. After all, if they were arrested, they are the ones who have something to answer for, not you.Maybe you should talk to your boss about it and get his/her opinion about it. But, I certainly wouldn't quit just because a few dirty small town politicians have their nose out of joint over something you wrote. As long as you wrote the piece objectively and truthfully to the best of your ability and knowledge, you have nothing to feel defensive about. I would get my bosses permission and write an eye-opening but tactful piece about it in the paper. You are the one with the power of the pen! You have a far better tool to changes minds and hearts than any of the people do who are giving you a hard time.

Sounds like Eureka, CA.

Best to stick it out until either your husband has a job with insurance or you get pregnant.

If you can't go to the local police about being stalked, or the State authorities, check out Federal sources.

Carry a camera and take pictures of anybody following you, and log it in a note pad. Writing in a note pad is a great attention getter because everybody is guilty of something.

If you are not happy and stressed out, its worth looking for something else. Or your husband should look for a way to get coverage for his new family. Cause you dont want to go back to work anyway after the baby, which is Great.

maybe you could write a peice explaining that you didn't really mean to be that hard on the person and you just had to do it.
then you can look at different jobs to see if they have insurance, while you are still working the newspaper gig.
