What do you think of the attitudes towards subjugated nations in this book? They appear somewhat patronising to me, but certainly not as insulting as references to Jewish people in early English literature [e.g. Chaucer and Marlowe]
which do you think is generally more offensive: colonial literature or medieval literature? and why?

fair point, azred. but when i say i find them offensive, i don't mean that they 'annoy' me. what i meant was that i can spot problems in them; as you say, these are understandable in teh context of the time. Sorry, didn't mean to sound like I was coming over all PC ;-]

Neither.

You cannot examine colonial or medieval literature through the filter of modern ethical and societal mores. Read them as they are written; if what they say offends you, quit reading them and move on to a different book.

edit: ah so. There are indeed problems with older literature, especially where scientific knowledge is concerned. The authors were limited by the concepts available to them at the time.
