You are going to want to learn more about RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Joining the Catholic Church (or converting) means you will receieve the 3 sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
How to go about this is different for each person. For example, you don't need to be "rebaptized" if you have been baptized into one of most of the mainstream Christian denominations. The sacrament of Confirmation is recognized from some of our Orthodox bretheran. So you might receive all three sacraments or just one...
For most people, you will go through about a year of classes where you learn about Catholicism and the Catholic church with lots of time to ask questions. Adults are usually initiated at the Easter Vigil (the evening before Easter Sunday), although that isn't always true.
Find a parish that you like and talk to the pastor and/or RCIA coordinator.

Talk to a priest from the local Catholic parish. He will help set you up in the Church's RCIA program. RCIA is Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. This will include, for those who have not already received, the Sacraments of Baptism, first Holy Communion, and Confirmation.
In the meantime, it might not be a bad idea to read up on Catholic beliefs and practices. Get yourself a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. They are not expensive. Soft-cover editions run from $4-$10.

I think you become Catholic once you are Baptized---As far as I can remember the other sacraments are prerequisites for the following one. Like:
you are Catholic when you are BAPTISED with the guidance of your godparents,
then you you have PENANCE/CONFESSION so that your sins are forgiven which is necessary before you can recieve
COMMUNION where you recieve the body of Christ
and then when you are ready to proceed following the faith on your own you can get CONFIRMED where you also have a sponsor but they are more as a person you refer to every once in a while unlike the Godparents. And you get a Confirmation name you take to assume your new role.
And only after recieving all the previous sacraments you can become MARRIED in the Catholic church or if you are becoming a priest its HOLY ORDERS.
And then its the last rites ANOINTING OF THE SICK if you are in a near death situation.

He would need to take the RCIA classes that have already began I believe. He may need to wait until next course to sign up for Confirmation, but I would have him go to a priest and make a confession and seek guidance from him, once a Catholic always a Catholic, he can go to confession and communion once he has confessed now. Pray the Rosary and receive the Sacraments, I will keep you and him in my prayers.

Depending on the church you either ask the priest or religious ed director for RCIA classes. RCIA will prepare you to be baptized (if not already), receive first communion, confession and confirmation. Usually all done at the Easter vigil mass.

If you are interested in joining or just learning more about the Catholic Church, contact your local parish and ask about information about their RCIA Inquiry group.
You can go and ask any questions you want.
This is the first step in RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) but you can stop at any time.
There is no obligation to become a Catholic.
With love and prayers in Christ.

To add to your question. Communion also called The Holy Eucharist to Catholics is the most important of the seven sacraments because, in this and no other sacrament, we receive the very body and blood soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. Many graces come to us through the reception of Holy communion. Just wanted to share our belief with you.

So you want to be a Catholic? or, are you looking for God and salvation? The next question? exactly what is communion... a cracker or a peice of unleavened bread and a jigger of Welchs grape juice or red wine? Most every denomination miss the understanding of communion and follow that "traditional" pattern, when actually, that is not what Jesus meant, and the bible tells us not to do so. But communion has a root word...Communicate. All it means is to come together and communicate about the word of God. Learn of him, and if you get hungry, go home and "eat"!:)>
If you want to know more email me, and I will take you through the study from God's word.

Dayton's brother Father Richard used to tell me all the time that I would sail through the required catechism lessons. All you need to do love is catch a Priest and they will lead you to it fast.
Did you know a good Lutheran can fake Catholicism like a lifetime pro?
