Actually, not only do we come from apes, we ARE biologically classified AS apes in the Linnaeus Classification System. People don't believe in evolution because it doesn't suit their world view - for some people mountains of evidence don't mean anything - they will believe whatever they choose to believe no matter what. Once you understand how DNA works, evolution becomes obvious, but most fundamentalist Christians aren't exactly well-versed in recombinant DNA.

What we're missing is this: somebody is at war with the US. I'm not sure who it is, but the fact that the war is on can't be doubted.
There was a time when the USA was the leading scientific country on the planet. Hands down, though we had strong competition from Russia, and less competition from Germany and the UK, our schools were the best, our scientists were A#1, and America's technical lead over the world was unquestionable.
Now, our products are second-rate, our college graduates can't think (or write), our industrial capacity is irrelevant, and America is well on the way to becoming irrelevant.
Who's to blame? The nutcase Christians. And whoever it is pulling their strings.
Listen, how well can our educational system educate when you have to spend half of the year UNteaching about the dangers that cavemen had to fend off due to carnivorous dinosaurs. How can you explain the theory of relativity based on astronomical observations when half of the class insists that the universe can't be 12 billion light-years across, since it's only 6000 years old.
The creationists are traitors. They have destroyed America. And in another generation, we'll be so enfeebled that being taken over by Mexico will be a blessing.
Oh, and for what it's worth, we so did NOT evolve from apes. We ARE apes. Bipedal primates without tails.
Yup. Forget about whether I descended from an ape on my mother's side or my father's side. I am descended from apes on both sides, 'cos I am an ape.
And proud of it, too. The resemblances are striking. We actually have 99.5% of our DNA in common with chimps. It's 'rillas and 'tangs that are more different, around 98% match for us'ns. In fact, most cladistic taxonomists regard the chimpanzee as Homo troglodytes. By the usual cladistic standards, chimps (and bonobos) belong in genus Homo, and the rest of the great apes belong in family hominidae.
And yes, great apes (and cetaceans, too) should have their civil rights recognized. Any civilized, intelligent species in our position would do so.
But we're not civilized. Or intelligent. We don't need to be. We're Christians.
Boo. Hiss.

The issue here is that accepting the bizarre belief systems of some religions makes people blind to genuine insanity. Serious mental illness is, well, serious. Religious discourse is often hysterical - it uses serious language to describe trivial or non existent conflicts. "I'm under attack from demons" can mean that someone's cognitive structure has seriously fractured, indicating a psychiatric emergency. It can also mean "I'm feeling conflicted about whether to have another slice of pie." Religious discourse makes the distinctions meaningless.

anyways as for the guy who said his preacher asked why there are still monkeys around if we eveolved from them, well heres a simple answer why are there 100s of types of birds? deer? reptiles.... they all evolved from ONE species..
if you dont belive in evealotion just look around people you can see animals evolving every were.

I agree with you, but many only believe the propaganda against evolution rather than the scientific facts that are known. Hen_the_fireball just proves my point. They only believe the incorrect assumptions made by people who are not familiar with the facts of evolution.
I am Christian and I belive that God created life, (not necessarily man from dirt, but life) and that life evolved over time into many different things.

It doesn't bother me in the least believing I share a common ancestor with apes. It's easier to believe than saying the first man was made of dirt and the first woman was made of a rib.

Those who think that their religion answers scientific questions are destined to a life of torment as their world view is consistently shattered by new discoveries. We are most adaptable if we keep an open mind and allow religion to do what it is good at, provide a context for talking about philosophy and morality.
Only religious people who are bad at science say that we came from monkeys. They refuse to consider that maybe we are distantly related to every living thing on the planet in some way like a family. I don't know why this beautiful and sensible concept is lost on them.

don't expect a lot of common sense answers from the religious crowd.
they tend to think of the world in terms of things that they fear and things they don't fear.
like their medieval ancestors they simply fear everything that they don't understand - which is a lot.
if we let the insane religios have their way, we will have a modern dark age, where children are taught religious creationism as 'science' and that theories like evolution don't merit time.
remember that it was religiously devout people who INSISTED that the world was flat and the center of the universe well into the 1800's - literally centuries after people were sailing AROUND the globe.
if we left our fate to them, we would have no advancements in the world - other than devices with which to torture people - my my the medieval priests were gifted at torture and used all of their technological prowess to maim and kill other people.
then as now, relition is about the advancement of not the human condition, but the power and control of religion...

It takes a leap of faith to arrive at either conclusion. Look at the evidence yourself and decide. I've seen both evolutionists and creationists on this board who fail to look at evidence, because they dismiss every piece of evidence there is on the subject. And why? Because the evidence doesn't add up to proof--of god or evolution.
You can't prove evolution or creation--you just have sketchy hints from a variety of sources, and short of building a time machine it will be tough to fill in a chain of evidence that would allow either of these theories to be considered proven fact. Instead of searching for an answer everyone is hung up on being right, and looking down their nose at the fools who are too stupid or too misled to agree with them.
